I
I began with a digital video camera, recording things experienced during daily life. Footage came from many sources including, industrial elevator shafts, a barn built by my wife’s Irish ancestors and collaborations with contemporary dancers. Most recently I used drawings and video sourced from my work with artists who have developmental disabilities.
I then took the footage and ran it through a video projector which was hung from the ceiling. Images were projected on sheets of Plexiglas and later on large canvases. The paint was poured on while they lay on the floor in ways that responded to the video imagery.
While the works serve as a record of the film making process they also take on a more organic life of their own. Titles hint at the original video source, while at the same time offering a personal interpretation of the painted results.
